No Hope in Dope? Where IS the Hope?

People say an addict has to “hit bottom,” come to a place, a theoretical destination, that is the worst place ever, a place that is so bad that the mere thought of staying there causes a person to find heretofore unimaginable motivation to change. One important aspect of “hitting bottom” as a catalyst for change is the belief that things can get better. What is important is not the depth of hopelessness but the depth of hope. Unfortunately, the worse things get, the more distant the feeling of hope. What do we cling to if we cannot look to dope to give us enjoyment. We know all about suffering. I submit that we are not offered enough hope to shine a light into the path of hope. If we cannot see the Hope there’s no way to gather heretofore unimagined strength and motivation to change. I know addicts who would trade everything, all the dope for a rock solid belief that there could be a hope and a future. Just hope, mind you. Not even a guarantee. Just hope.
